On the Cover: Spring regrowth of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) comes through flowering arrowleaf clover (Trifolium vesiculosum) overseeded in the autumn. In warmer regions, annual cool-season legumes such as arrowleaf clover may provide sustainable, nonfossil fuel derived nitrogen to switchgrass harvested in the autumn for biomass. Because the legume grows when the grass is dormant, competition between the two is minimal. See Muir et al., page 1621. (Photo by Randy Bow.)
