About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: A germinating seed of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) with visible radicle, coleoptile, and first leaf. The germination phase is crucial during seed establishment. The ability to germinate fast is particularly important for the competitive ability of a turfgrass species sown in the mixture. Choosing a fast-germinating cultivar may be one way of improving the establishment, particularly when sowing slowly germinating species such as Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and red fescue (Festuca rubra L. ssp. litoralis Vasey) together with the fast-germinating species of perennial ryegrass (see Larsen & Bibby, 891-899).
