Cover: The harvest of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) cultivar Malang 1 in Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia. Malang 1 is one of the 38 improved cassava cultivars selected from Latin American germplasm provided by CIAT and released by national programs in six countries in Asia during 16 yr (1984-1999). These cultivars had great economic effects and small farmers in the poorer rural areas of the tropics, the target population for these cultivars, captured a large proportion of the economic benefits (see Kawano, 1325-1335).
