A symposium entitled Lignin and Forage Digestibility, sponsored by the Forage and Grazing Lands Division (C6), was held at the CSSA Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, on 4 Nov. 2003. The goal of the symposium was to highlight recent advances in understanding the impact of lignification on forages. Seven speakers made presentations covering a variety of topics. John Ralph (USDA-ARS, Madison, WI) described the controversy that has developed about the definition of lignin, particularly with regard to unusual types of lignin found in natural mutants and transgenic plants. The difficulty of measuring lignin concentration was explored by Ronald D. Hatfield (USDA-ARS, Madison, WI). Localization and timing of lignin deposition in plant tissues, and the resulting impact on digestibility by rumen microorganisms, was described by Ferdinand M. Engels (Wageningen University, the Netherlands). John H. Grabber (USDA-ARS, Madison, WI) reviewed the roles of lignin composition, structure, and cross-linking with cell wall polysaccharides on forage digestibility. The impact of lignin on fiber digestibility, feed intake, and milk production by dairy cows was discussed by Michael S. Allen (Michigan State University, East Lansing). Richard A. Dixon (Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Ardmore, OK) described recent efforts aimed at modifying lignification of forages using molecular biology. Finally, agronomic fitness of forages as related to reduced lignin concentration was evaluated in a presentation by Jeffrey F. Pedersen (USDA-ARS, Lincoln, NE). Articles resulting from three of these presentations are published in this issue of Crop Science.
