REGISTRATIONS OF PARENTAL LINES

Registration of T270 Parental Line of Maize

T270 (Reg. no. PL-307, PI 631444) is a yellow dent maize (Zea mays L.) inbred line developed by the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station and released 11 March 2002. T270 was released for its potential use in producing full season yellow maize hybrids, and as a source of germplasm for maize breeding programs.

T270 was developed by ear-to-row selection and self-pollination. The pedigree of T270 is as follows: Tennessee Synthetic One (TS1) 18#-2S-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1. TS1 is a broad based population that was formed by intermating several populations that had been crossed to Tennessee Late-Low-Ear synthetic (TLLE) (Josephson et al., 1982), which contributes 50% of the genes in TS1. The following populations each contributed approximately 1.8% of the genes in TS1: PRMo2/SQA (Craig et al., 1976b); Tennessee Southern Germplasm Pool; Jellicorse synthetic; South Carolina Corn Belt Tropical synthetic; Potchefstroom Pearl; Tennessee Smut Resistant synthetic (Josephson et al., 1982); Tennessee Virus Resistant synthetic (Josephson et al., 1982); Tennessee Upright Leaf synthetic; PRMp1 and PRMp4 (Craig et al., 1976a); MpSWCB (Scott and Davis, 1981); FL-FSH, a Florida population; West Indies Composite; Tekoe Yellow; American White flint; Golden Beauty flint; Peruvian flint; North Carolina JR10 and IR10 (Moll and Stuber, 1979). Each of the following inbred lines also contributed 1.8% of the genes in TS1; Mo26W, Mo27W, Mo28W, Mo29W, Mo30W, Mo31W, Mo32W, and Mo33W. TS1 was intermated in isolation with mild selection for ear size and plant health for five generations before initiating ear-to-row inbreeding and selection. During development and testing of this line, it had the experimental designation TS1-18S.

T270 has been crossed with Lancaster Surecrop and Iowa Stiff Stalk synthetic derived lines, and yields have been higher with Iowa Stiff Stalk synthetic lines, though the differences were small. Hybrids produced with T270 as a parent produced average yields of 10209 kg ha-1 compared to 9883 kg ha-1 for two commercial check hybrids in yield trials in Tennessee from 1997 through 2001.

T270 is a late maturing line in Tennessee, rated 1200 in the AES system. Heat units to pollen shed were 1500 for T270, compared with 1400 for Mo17 in our 2001 nursery. Plant height in 2001 was 1.99 m for T270 compared with 1.82 m for Mo17. Ear height of T270 was 0.67 m, compared to 0.70 m for Mo17. T270 has erect leaves, and there are usually 6 or 7 leaves above the top ear-bearing node. The tassel of T270 is compact and dense with a central spike and 10 to 14 lateral branches. It is a heavy pollen producer for 3 or 4 d. T270 has yellow anthers and green silks. Flower synchronization is excellent, with silk emergence seldom delayed more than 1 d after pollen shed. In Tennessee nurseries, the plants produce many sun-red brace roots to the second or third node above the crown. T270 produces a large girthy ear with 16 or 18 rows of very hard, medium sized orange kernels on a white cob.
