5601T (Reg. no. CV-441, PI 630984) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was developed by the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station and was released in 2001. It was released because of its high yield throughout broad geographical regions of southern USA.
5601T is an F6derived line from the cross Hutcheson x TN89-39 (Buss et al., 1988). TN89-39 is a selection from the cross TN81-2 x TN80-69. TN81-2 is a selection from the cross Lee74 x Mitchell (Caviness et al., 1975; USDA-ARS GRIN, 2002). TN80-69 is a selection from the cross Essex x J74-40 (Smith and Camper, 1973). J74-40 is a selection from the cross Forrest (3) x PI88788 (Hartwig, 1973). The F1 plants from Hutcheson x TN89-39 were grown in Knoxville, TN in 1992. Harvested F2 seeds were sent to Costa Rica in January 1993 and grown for generation advancement, without selection, via modified single seed descent (advancing a single multiseeded pod rather than a single seed per plant), to the F5 generation (Brim, 1966). The F6 population was grown at Knoxville, TN, in 1994 and single plants were harvested. The F6:7 progeny rows were grown at Knoxville, TN, in 1995, and those rows which were visually desirable were bulk harvested. In 1996, seed from one of these bulks was designated as line TN96-58 and entered in a preliminary yield test grown at two locations (Knoxville and Jackson, TN). TN96-58 was selected based on superior yield and other desirable agronomic traits.
TN96-58 was evaluated for yield in Tennessee from 1996 to 2001, where its mean yield of 3259 kg ha-1 significantly (P < 0.05) exceeded that of Hutcheson (2923 kg ha-1) averaged over 45 environments. In the Tennessee State Variety Test, averaged over 2 yr (20002001), the yield of TN96-58 (2889 kg ha-1), was equivalent to the best commercial entry, and significantly (P < 0.05) exceeded the yield of Hutcheson (2553 kg ha-1, Allen and Warden, 2001).
TN96-58 was entered in the USDA Uniform Soybean Tests, Southern States, Preliminary Group V Test in 1998 and Uniform Group V Test in 1999, 2000, and 2001 (Paris et al., 2002). TN96-58 was named 5601T on release in 2001. In the USDA Uniform tests (19992001), 5601T produced 3252 kg ha-1 seed yield, with 196 g kg-1 seed oil, 422 g kg-1 seed protein, and 13.0 g 100 seeds-1, compared with Hutcheson which produced 3044 kg ha-1 seed yield, 206 g kg-1 seed oil, 409 g kg-1 seed protein, and 13.4 g 100 seeds-1. 5601T was 0.7 d earlier in maturity than Hutcheson and 4.2 cm taller at harvest. Lodging resistance in 5601T was equivalent to that of Hutcheson. 5601T has white flowers, gray pubescence, tan podwall, and a determinate growth habit. Seed are yellow with buff hila (Paris et al., 2002).
5601T is resistant to stem canker [caused by Diaporthe phaseolorum (Cooke & Ellis) Sacc. var. caulivora K.L. Athow & R.M. Caldwell], resistant to Soybean mosaic virus, resistant to southern root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognitaa (Kofoid and White) Chitwood], and moderately resistant to peanut root-knot nematode [Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal) Chitwood]. 5601T is susceptible to soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) and susceptible to sudden death syndrome [caused by Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc.].
The Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station will maintain Breeder seed. An application for U.S. Plant Variety Protection is being filed for 5601T. Small samples (200 seeds) of 5601T can be obtained from the corresponding author for at least 5 yr.
