(A) A procedure for most target traits which can be scored phenotypically for all individuals or fixed lines, and then high- and low-phenotypic extremes are selected for further analysis. (B) A procedure particularly suitable for abiotic and biotic stress tolerance where only the phenotypic extreme for tolerance is available under a target environment and comparison is made between the extreme and the phenotypic control that is randomly selected from the individuals or fixed lines under a normal environment.
