Germination of Oryzopsis holciformis (M.B.) Hack, Phalaris tuberosa L., Medicago polymorpha L., Medicago truncatula Gaertn., and cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were compared in D-mannitol solutions of 0, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0, 4.0, 8.0 and 15 atm. osmotic concentration at 4, 10, 15, 20 and 25 C. The effect of temperature X osmotic potential interaction differed with the aspect of germination investigated. Onset of germination was delayed in all species by an osmotic potential above 4 atm. In Phalaris and Oryzopsis, onset of germination also was negatively correlated with temperature. Final germination percentage was dependent on the temperature X osmotic potential interaction in all range species. The more the temperature diverged from the optimum for germination, the more final germination became dependent on osmotic potential. The rate of germination was greatly affected by temperature at all osmotic potentials in all species, while the effect of osmotic potential was greatly dependent on temperature.
