Four, five, and nine generations, depending on the synthetic, of four autotetraploid maize (Zea mays L.) synthetics created by the "elongate" method were compared for 2 years at Urbana, Ill. In all four synthetics, percent seed set, yield, plant height, and ear height increased with advancing generations. Large increases occurred between particular cycles followed by cycles where no changes occurred. Possible reasons for this type of increase rather than a steady increase over all cycles are discusse
