Mechanisms of Strontium Accumulation in Tissues of Wheat Spikes 1

Lyle E. Craker2 and Lawrence H. Smith3

Studies of strontium accumulation in grain of excised wheat (Triticum aestivum L) spikes indicate that active mechanisms, analogous to those based upon the carrier concept in root absorption studies, mediate this process.

No evidence was found to suggest that Sr is passively accumulated in grain. No relationship, between transpiration rate .and Sr accumulation in gram was found.

Key Words: Ion accumulation in grain • Transpiration and ion accumulation • Ion carriers
