Comparison of agronomic and seed quality characters of 17 near-isogenic pairs of flax lines showed that the d locus was not associated with seed yield, maturity, height, or seed germination. Lines homozygous for the recessive d allele (yellow seed and pink flowers) had significantly smaller seed and higher iodine value than lines homozygous for the dominant D allele (brown seed and blue flowers). Percent oil of the two seed color classes differed significantly in each of four trials, but the differences were not consistent. High oil content was associated with the recessive allele in half the trials, but with the dominant allele in the other 2 trials. The analyses of variance strongly suggests that the chromosomal segment adjacent to the d locus is active in determining oil content and seed size, and that the d locus has a pleiotropic effect upon iodine value.
