In vitro foam tests of plant extracts were used to study the inheritance of bloat-inducing qualities of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. and M. falcata L.) in a 12-clone diallel cross. General combining ability and general combining ability by year interaction effects were significant sources of variation. Heritability estimates obtained by doubling the regression of cross progeny array means on corresponding parent values and by regression of the self progeny means on the parent values both equaled .73. Significant differences in foaming volume also were detected among Selected open pollinated progenies of 35 plant introductions. It was concluded that varieties with low foam volume and possibly reduced danger of bloat to grazing ruminants could be developed by recurrent selection procedures
