Eight creeping-rooted alfalfa selections, Medicago sativa L., were crossed with random samples of Flemish and non-Flemish populations. Root and aerial characteristics of progenies were measuredto determinep ossible correlations under competitive row conditions in the field. The low correlations between root and aerial characteristics suggest that it should be possible to develop cultivars whichc ombinet he lateral-rooted characteristic (and presumably, resistance to heaving) with the vigor of presently grown cultiwars.
