Organic Acids from Leaves of Several Crop Plants by Gas Chromatography1

Ralph B. Clark2

Organic acids from leaf extracts of Hordeum vulgare L., Zea mays L., Avena sativa L., Secale cereale L., Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, Triticum aestivum L., Medicago sativa L., Glycine max (L.) Merr., Phaseolus vulgaris L., and Lycopersicon esculentum, Mill, were separated by gas chromatography. Good chromatographic separation of trimethylsilyl-derivatives of the organic acids were obtained using N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)acetamide as the esterifying reagent. Trans-aconitic acid was one of the predominant acids in the cereal crops, but not in the dicotyledonous plants. Relatively high amounts of malonic acid were found in the legumes. The Krebs cycle acids were found in all the plants studied.

Key Words: Krebs cycle Acids • Transaconitic acid • Malonic acid • Trimethylsilylation of organic acids
