A rational simulator of photosynthesis in a single leaf has been constructed by incorporating the effects of light, temperature and CO2 upon light and dark respiration, stomatal resistance to CO2 diffusion and photochemical ability. The physical resistances of the boundary layer and mesophyll are also incorporated. The simulator behaves like a real leaf, demonstrating the fairly satisfactory state of knowledge of CO2 assimilation. More important, it permits estimates of the efficacy of changes in respiration and other identified characteristics in changing net assimilation.
