The nature of reproductive barriers between Phalaris arundinacea L. and P. tuberosa var. stenoptera (Hack.) Hitch, were investigated. Histological studies of the embryo sac of P. arundinacea following interspecific pollination revealed that endosperm development proceeded normally until the third day, while embryo development appeared normal until the sixth day. Embryo abortion was attributed to a failure of the endosperm to differentiate normally. In the reciprocal cross, P. arundinacea pollen tubes penetrated the stigma; however, failure of the P. arundinacea gametophyte to effect fertilization was the major barrier to hybridization. Procedures for prolonging the flowering period of P. arundinacea and for testing for interspecific fertilization are described.
