Inheritance of Isozyme Differences Among the Inbred Parents of a Reciprocal Recurrent Selection Population of Maize1

A. H. D. Brown and R. W. Allard2

The inbred parents of two Reciprocal Recurrent Selection Populations, A and B, of Zea mays L., are shown to differ in electrophoretic mobility for at least five enzyme systems. Data are presented demonstrating that each of these systems is governed by a single locus; two codominant alleles were found for one locus, and three codominant alleles for each of the other four loci. The five loci assort independently. Individual seedlings can be scored tar all five loci simultaneously. Such classification allows an individual to be assigned to one of 243 genotypic classes in Population A, and to one of 1,944 classes in Population B. The uses of these isozyme polymorphisms in the study of the genetic structure of these populations are discussed

Key Words: Alcohol Dehydrogenase • Co-dominant alleles • Electrophoretic mobility • Esterase • Peroxidase • Phosphatase
