Evidence is presented which indicates that apomixis does not operate in annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) and that seed production and viability are good following either self- or cross-fertilization. Annual bluegrass was shown to possess a remarkable ability to ripen viable seeds on panicles excised from the plant 1 or 2 days after pollination. This characteristic is considered to be the most important attribute in determining the success of annual bluegrass as a weed of arable land and of mown pastures and turf.
