Genetic Variance and Selective Value of Ear Number in Corn (Zea mays L.)1

Charles A. Laible and V. A. Dirks2

Means, genetic variances and genetic covariances for ear number and yield were evaluated in the P1 P2 F1 F2 F3 B1 B2 B11 B22 and B21 generations to determine the inheritance of ear number and its relationship to yield in segregating populations of corn (Zea mays L.). Ear number means and genetic variance component analyses generally approached expected values for an additive model with partial to complete dominance for multiple ears. Likewise, yield means followed an additive pattern with some evidence for dominance effects suggested by the variance components. The use of a selection index composed of ear nmnber and yield was superior to selection based upon yield alone.

Key Words: selection indices • genotypic correlations • phenotypic correlations
