Inheritance of Small, Purple Flower Standard in Korean Lespedeza, Lespedeza Stipulacea1

Marion S. Offutt2

The inheritance of small, purple flower standard in Korean Lespedeza (Lespedeza stipulacea Maxim.) was studied in two crosses. F1, F2, and F3 data indicate that the small, purple flower standard mutant character is controlled by a single recessive gene pair. Colorimetric and chromatographic analyses of flower standard extracts indicate that the mutant and normal standards contain equal quantities of the same anthocyanin pigments, which accounts for the darker purple color of the mutant standard. Thus, the only real difference detected between the mutant and normal standards was in size.

Key Words: flower standard size • marker gene • mutation • ionizing radiation
