A Leaf Abnormality for the Identification of a Genetic Male Sterile in Gossypium hirsutum L.1

J. E. Quisenberry and R. J. Kohel2

We found a leaf abnormality associated with male-sterile-2 in Gossypium hirsutum. Male-sterile-2 is completely male sterile and inherited as a monogenic recessive. A study was conducted to determine whether the observed leaf abnormality was a pleiotropic effect or linkage. Male-sterile-2 and the leaf abnormality showed no recombination. Pleiotropv was assumed, althoueh very close linkage could not be ruled out. We tested for allelism between the leaf abnormality and the previously reported abnormal palisade mutant (because they were phenotypically similar) but they were not allelic.

Key Words: pleiotropy
