Five hybrids and eight varieties of barley, Hordeum vulgare L., were evaluated at four seeding rates. A split plot design with four replications at each of two locations was employed. Main plots consisted of seeding rates which corresponded to within-row plant spat ings of 2.5, 7.5, 15.0, and 22.5 cm. Rows were 30.5 cm apart. Hybrids and parental varieties constituted subplots. The average performance of hybrids and varieties was similar for yield and components of yield at the 2.5-cm spacing, a rate which approximates solid seeding. At the wider spacings hybrids were significantly superior to the varieties for yield and two of three components of yield. Average estimates of heterosis for yield, based on the midparent comparison, were 32, 16.7, 17.3, and 22.5% for the 4 spacings, respectively. Hybrids did not respond to the various spacings in the same manner. The implication is that data from spaced plantings may lead to erroneous conclusions concerning hybrid performance at commercial seeding rates.
