Use of early generation testing procedures for quality has a direct effect on the efficiency of any wheat breeding program. Soft wheat breeders now have access to three micro tests (tests involving small samples of grain) which can be used as early in varietal development as the F2 or F3.
Heritabilities and expected genetic advance for the quality characters measured by micro AWRC, micro pearling index, and micro flour yield, are high based on data from F2 and F3 progenies of one cross, Blackhawk X Kharkof. Results, though limited, indicate that a wheat breeder may expect to make significant gains through early generation selection for any one of the three quality characteristics measured by the micro tests. Growing breeding lines at one location, at least under conditions expected in an average season, is sufficient for evaluation based on these three micro tests.
