The seed weight of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) increased most rapidly during the first 15 days after flowering, and reached maximum dry weight in about 28 days. On a weight basis, oil content increased 5- to 10-fold in the period 10 to 15 days after flowering. Expression of control by the genes governing differences in fatty acid composition began about l0 days after flowering.
