A method is described for evaluating the cold water tolerance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties in the seedling stage. The seedlings are grown on fertilized soil, submerged in about 15 cm of water at 15.5 ± 1 C for 26 days. The arrangement of the varieties within replications and the replications within the water bath was based on results from a uniformity trial. Seedling height is the criterion of cold water tolerance.
