Oat Maturity and Crown Rust Response1

M. D. Simons and L. J. Michel2

The crown rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. var. avenae Fraser & Led.) response of 114 F4 lines from each of two oat (Avena sativa L.) crosses was measured in terms of yield and kernel weight. Yield, kernel weight, and kernel density were used similarly for 130 pure line strains of oats. All three characters were negatively and significantly correlated with heading date. The use of regression coefficients of these three characters on heading date in comparing the relative inherent crown rust response of strains having different heading dates was discussed.

Key Words: disease tolerance • oat varietal maturity
