Influence of Defoliation and Nitrogen on the Development and the Fructan Composition of the Vegetative Reproductive System of Timothy Phleum pratense, L.)1

A sequence of development of the vegetative reproductive system of timothy consisting of primary and secondary haplocorms and tertiary shoots is proposed. Initiation of spring growth was from tertiary shoots and independent of the primary and secondary haplocorms. Nitrogen fertilization at 280 kg N/ha decreased the dry weight and fructan in primary haplocorms but increased the dry weight and fructan in the secondary haplocorms, particularly during the initial formative period. Nitrogen increased the dry weight but lowered the fructan concentration in the tertiary shoot. Survival and spring growth were not restricted where the fructan in the tertiary shoot was reduced by two-thirds to a level of 5% over the winter dormancy period.
