Two experiments were conducted in a growth chamber to study effects of carbohydrate reserves, nitrogen fertilization, and carbohydrate intermediates on accumulation of ketone bodies and carbohydrate depletion in orchardgrass stubble.
Acetate as a ketone body precursor caused a marked increase in ketone body levels, especially with low as compared with high carbohydrate reserves. When glucose was added a further drop in the ketone body level occurred. Ketone body levels varied with nitrogen and carbohydrate reserves in the stubble in a second experiment. There was an inverse relationship between reducing sugars and the amount of ketone bodies extracted from the stubble for low carbohydrate reserve treatments. Ketone body contents did not vary with treatments for plants high in carbohydrate reserves.
