Cytogenetic Studies on the Genus Linum I. Hybrids Among Taxa With 15 as the Haploid Chromosome Number1

Nine Linum taxa and 13 hybrids among them were studied. Meiosis in all parental taxa was regular. Hybrid seed set ranged from 31 to 85%. In hybrids, meiosis was characterized by the presence of high frequency of univalents and by the formation of multiple associations of chromosomes at metaphase I, leading to the following conclusion: L. usitatissimum differs from L. angustifolium, L. africanum and L. decumbens by one translocation; L. angustifolium differs from L. africanum, L. corymbiferum and L. decumbens by two translocations. Except for these translocations, the taxa studied have homologous chromosomes. It is postulated that speciation within this group of taxa has proceeded through chromosomal reorganization.
