The feasibility of making selections in the F2 and F3 generation on the basis of prediction tests of barley quality was evaluated. Prediction tests made on F2 generation material were found to be unsatisfactory as a measure of quality of the F3 generation, based on heritability estimates and correlation coefficients. Heritability estimates obtained using variance components in the F3 generation were high and indicated that progress should be possible when selecting for nitrogen, extract, or diastatic power in this generation. Correlation coefticients among the three quality factors showed that extract was negatively associated with nitrogen and with diastatic power and that nitrogen and diastatic power were positively associated
