Pollen Dispersal and Cross-Pollination of Soft Red Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)1

Hand emasculated wheat spikes left exposed to wind borne pollen and vaseline-coated slides were used to measure pollen dispersal and seed set on several females under conditions of high and limited pollen loads. Seed set was directly related to wind-borne pollen load. Some females were quite superior in the ability to set seed from wind-borne pollen. About 4 or 5 days of good pollen load were required for maximum seed set. Timing of the female exactly with pollinator generally gave the maximum seed set.
