Why Store Genetic Stocks?1

Edwin James2

Genetic collections qualify for storage at the National Seed Storage Laboratory. Advantages in using this facility are: (1) collections are maintained intact with continuing high viability; (2) seed distribution to interested scientists is made on request; (3) the depositor is kept informed as to the viability of collections; and (4) the Laboratory assumes the responsibility through contract arrangements for reincreases in case viabilities decline.

Key Words: collections • storage • seeds • preservation • maintenance

2 Head, National Seed Storage Laboratory, Crops Research Division, Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Fort Collins, Colorado.

Received for publication January 21, 1967.
