Linkage was detected between powdery mildew resistance and female sterility, both of which are controlled by recessive duplicate genes in tobacco. An F1 hybrid was obtained by crossing a resistant sterile line (pm1 st1/pm1 st1, pm2 st2/pm2 st2) with the susceptible fertile tobacco variety Hicks. F2, F3, and testcross data were used for estimating linkage intensity by the method of maximum likelihood. A combined linkage intensity was estimated and heterogeneity of the linkage values was tested by using Fisher's scoring method. It was found that pm1 and st1 and pm2 and st2 were linked on both chromosomes with the same intensity of 89.81% ± 0.87% (or recombination value 10.19%). A heterogeneity test indicated that the linkage intensities estimated from varioats types of data were homogeneous. Assumptions used in the process of estimating linkage intensity were discussed.
