Growth of Birdsfoot Trefoil and Alfalfa. I. Responses to Height and Frequency of Cutting1

The responses of birdsfoot trefoil and alfalfa to frequency and height of cutting were studied. Single-row plots were harvested 3, 4, 5, or 6 times before early September, leaving a stubble of 2.5, 7.6, or 15.2 cm. Responses of both legumes to cutting frequency were similar. Yields of forage and protein decreased as cutting frequency increased. The amount of stubble left at cutting was more important to trefoil than to alfalfa and was most clearly apparent in the the second harvest year. A leafy stubble was needed to maintain the yields at all cutting frequencies for trefoil, but only with the most frequent cutting schedule for alfalfa.
