An experiment was conducted in the field to study the inheritance of awn presence and character in a cross between Avena byzantina C. Koch (The Kanota variety) and Avena jatua L. The presence of large, dark-colored, twisted awns on the first and second florets in oat spikelets was found to be controlled by one recessive gene pair.
