Studies in Male-Sterile Barley. II. Pollen Abortion¹

We compared microsporogenesis and pollen development on four male sterile lines of barley and their fertile counterparts. Two lines were six-row and two were two-row types. Development through meiosis was similar in fertile and sterile lines but subsequently the microspores in the fertile lines formed mature pollen grains, whereas those in sterile lines degenerated. In six-row types, degeneration occured at the free microspore stage, but in two-row types it took place even while the microspores were still enclosed by the wall of the microspore mother cell.
