The F1 progenies of eight clones of Medicago sativa crosed in all combinations and the polycross progenies of the eight clones were seeded in 10-foot rows. Coefficients of determination for multiple regression of dry weight of plants on July 21 and September 6 with characters associated with dry weight (height, width, stand, % leaves, and Leptosphaerulina leafspot) varied from 0.61 to 0.68 when calculated on an individual plot basis. Predictive equations were generated for both dates using F1 and polycross data. Correlation coefficients calculated on means between F1 observed and predicted yield were 0.89 and 0.90, respectively, for July 21 and September 6 harvest, using the predictive equation generated from F1 data. The correlations between F1 observed and predicted yields were 0.89 and 0.92, respectively, for the July 21 and September 6 harvest, using the predictive equation generated from the polycross data. Selection based on the variables associated with dry weight would be 96% and 109% as effective as selection based on actual dry weight for the July 21 and September 6 harvest respectively.
