Test crosses in Fairway crested wheatgrass (2n = 14) indicated spike color to be controlled by a single gene Yy, with gray spikes being yy and green-spiked plants YY or Yy. Phenotypic frequencies were 72% bright green, 8% gray, and 20% intermediate gray-green. Intermediate gray-green plants were usually heterozygous, but occasionally homozygous YY. No yield differences could be detected between green and gray-spiked forms, but the gray form was slightly lower in fibre content.
