Inheritance of a Strain-Specific Ineffective Nodulation in Soybeans1

Certain strains of Rhizobium japonicum fail to produce effective nodules on the soybean variety ‘Hardee,’ Glycine max L. Merr.). F1, F2, and F3 generations of Hardee x normal nodulating varieties were used to study the inheritance of the strain-specific ineffective nodulation of Hardee. Ineffective nodulation was found to be conditioned by a single dominant gene, which was given the symbol Rj2. Investigation of the parentage of Hardee indicated that the source of this gene was the parent ‘CNS.’
