The association of fertility in the F2 and F3 of three indica x japonica rice hybrids, having disparate degrees of sterility, was studied in relation to the effectiveness of early selection for fertility. As the results indicated a direct parent-progeny association of fertility among the first three plant generations, it was concluded that early selection for fertility is desirable and effective in wide crosses. Breeding behavior in the F3 suggested the extreme complexity of intervarietal hybrid sterility.
