Transgressive segregation for increased winter hardiness was found in a cross between the winter oat cultivars C.I. 4897 x Dubois. C.I. 4897 is an introduction from Wales and Dubois was developed at Purdue University. Transgressive segregation was expressed both as greater resistance to leaf kill resulting from fall freezes and higher percent winter survival. In a replicated evaluation 44 F7 lines selected for winter hardiness and other characteristics averaged 66% survival, Dubois 9% and C.I. 4897 3%.
