Gene Interaction for Quantitative Changes in Carbohydrates in Maize Kernels1

R. G. Creech and F. J. McArdle2

The results of chemical analyses for carbohydrates in mature maize kernels of 30 genotypic combinations of the genes ae, du, sh2, su1 su2, and wx were presented. Taste panel ratings were reported for kernels 28 days after pollination. These data presented new information and supported previous findings that specific genes were involved at various points in carbohydrate synthesis and each was discussed. Certain gene combinations were indicated to be useful in sweet corn quality improvement. Problems associated with specific gene combinations were discussed.
