Quantitative Presentation of the Systematic Relationships Among Twenty-one Sorghum Species1

Twenty-one species in the subsection ArundinaceaS nowden, subgenus Eu-Sorghum Stapf, genus Sorghum Moench, were studied to obtain the pattern of interspecific variation. A statisical taxonomic method which employs numerous but unweigbted characters was used to derive the quantitative index of affinity between any two species. The indices of association then were exploited in establishment of a diagram suggestive of phylogenetic relationships.

A tree-like diagram was constructed from between species correlations and the resultant correlation matrices. The diagram shows the interspecific relationship amongth e species studied, and indicates that the species may be divided into three series consisting of 14, 6, and 1 species, respectively.
