Fifty years ago there were only a few states with turfgrass research programs. Today, most states have turfgrass research and education programs at their land grant institutions. In 1955, 15 research papers were presented at the annual meeting and in 2004 there were 215. Division C-5 (Turfgrass Science) has grown to more than 500 members. This manuscript addresses some of the important historical developments of Division C-5, and discusses some of the accomplishments and contributions of its members to turfgrass science. During the last 50 yr, turfgrass science has experienced a number of important milestones in turfgrass breeding, genetics, and evaluation, physiology, soil physics, soil cultivation, and environmental impacts. These milestones are discussed here. The importance and availability of turfgrass information and funding resources are discussed. The 10 most influential contributors to turfgrass science during the past 50 yr as recognized by their peers are also identified. Like our sister divisions in the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), Division C-5 can take pride in its past contributions, and can look forward to a bright and challenging future.
