An Encoding Process for Morphological Analysis of Soybean Fruit Distribution

Numerical analysis and summarization of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.J morphological data has been complicated by the amount of data and the use of stick diagrams to illustrate plant growth. This note explains how to encode morphological data by mapping fruit locations with a tree directory. Encoded data are easily entered into computers for analysis by commercial statistical and graphical software. Three examples are given to illustrate the power and versatility of using numerical analysis to explore critical facts and tendencies of soybean morphology. This encoding procedure can be adapted to other branching plants or branching plant parts.
