Selectin of Superior Female Parents in Sorghum Utilizing A3 Cytoplasm

Prior to evaluation in hybrid combination, potential female parents of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] must be male-sterilized. A substantial amount of time and effort is expended sterilizing females that are ultimately rejected due to inferior performance when tested in hybrid combination. Being able to identify superior females prior to male-sterilization would be advantageous and would enable a sorghum breeder to concentrate only on superior females. This research investigated the possibility of utilizing A3 testers, R-lines that are fertility restorers in Al cytoplasm but bad been male-sterilized in A3 cytoplasm, for determining the relative value of female sorghum lines when used in hybrid combinations. Standard Al hybrids were compared in the field with their predictor reciprocal A3 hybrids in 1988 and 1989. Analysis of variance revealed no significant differences between cytoplasms. Interactions with cytoplasm, which could potentially limit the utility of this procedure, were not detected. Pairwise t-tests between specific Al hybrids and their respective reciprocal A3 hybrids revealed few significant differences. These results indicated that the relative performance of hybrid progeny produced by an Al female and an Rl male line can be detected by the relative performance of the reciprocal cross produced by pollinating an A3 sterile version of an Rl line with pollen from the maintainer version of the Al female.
