Whereas barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars grown in the northern Great Plains of the USA are susceptible to leaf rust, they could be improved by the use of either race specific or slow rusting types of resistance. The composite cross CC XXXV-A was shown to be a source of both types of resistance. Plants from the composite cross were evaluated in the greenhouse and in the field for specific resistance (as indicated by infection types) and slow rusting resistance (as indicated by the area under the disease progress curve, AUDPC) to race 4 of the Puccinia hordei. Among 349 seedlings tested in the greenhouse, 73% exhibited specific resistance. Among 50 barley entries tested during 2 yrs in the field, entries with a high level of slow rusting resistance (small AUDPC 1) were found. Single plant evaluation for slow rusting resistance appeared to be a viable approach to rapid selection of desirable genotypes. The composite cross CC XXXV-A contained many outstanding sources for both types of resistance and may be useful for breeding programs.
