A hypothesis from a previous study, based on analysis of infection-type data, that the hard red winter wheat Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Newton has Lrl as well as other Lr genes was tested by crossing Newton with a line having Lrl. No segregation occurred in progeny of this cross when inoculated with an Lp1 culture of Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm. Thus, we accept that Newton does have Lrl. Segregation did occur in progeny of crosses between Newton and lines having Lr3a and Lr10, showing that Newton does not have Lr3a and Lr10. Analyses of seedling test and field reaction data of 200 head-row progenies of Newton breeder's seed indicated that Newton is heterogeneous for reaction to P. recondita and that some plants of Newton have Lr genes detectable only when tests are made at low (5°C) temperature with certain cultures.
