Crown Depth in Eastern Soft White Winter Wheats1

L. A. Hunt, B. D. McKersie and D. G. Tanner2

Seventeen cultivars of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were tested for depth of crown development under two temperature regimes. Significant effects of both cultivar and temperature were noted, but no genotype by temperature interaction was observed. Cultivars of similar origin exhibited widely different crown depths, and some cultivars of high winterhardiness had shallow crowns. It was concluded that the variation available for crown depth either has not been fully exploited, or the advantages of deep crown placement for survival under some stress situations are offset by disadvantages for survival under other conditions.

Key Words: Triticum aestivum L. • Winterhardiness • Cold tolerance
