The purpose of this research was to develop a practical method for long-term pollen storage of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum L. Leeke). Pearl millet pollen with 7.5% moisture stored for 185 days in plastic zip-lock bags at –73 C gave 100% seed set when used to pollinate cytoplasmic male sterile (cms) Tift 23DA heads. Pollen dried to 2.2% also gave 100% seed set on cms heads after 129 days of storage. Frozen pollen with 6 to 7% moisture content that was thawed for 3 hours, refrozen, and later used in crosses produced 100% seed set.
